BLACKLISTED is a one-woman Cabaret about Borders and Belonging.
Immigration Sucks, especially if you hold a unique passport.
At the age of 19, Almitra struck a deal with her mother. Her aspirations of a future in theatre compelled her to leave Pakistan. Yet, two obstacles loomed: her one-of-a-kind passport and the hurdles of Canada.
In this deeply personal performance, accompanied by original music compositions, she unfolds her narrative of displacement, experiences with racial profiling, and setbacks with visa applications.. Originally an angsty hate letter to Canada, the show has evolved into a heartwarming tale of borders and belonging that is both unique and universally relevant.
Drawing on musical influence from iconic sources like Queen, The Eagles, Hamilton, South Asian orchestral melodies, Blues, and Jazz, "Blacklisted" guides you through an expedition spanning from the rooftops of Karachi to the serene sands of Coogee.
Directed by Jessica Fallico (Kinky Boots, Packemin Productions) this playful, genre-blending tale of a woman's journey homeward takes the stage.
Blacklisted was originally developed as part of the Rogues on the Rocks Summer Residencies, made possible with the support of Sydney Fringe Festival, NSW Place Management, and The Rocks precinct in 2020. It then had its first development viewing at the Hayes Theatre in 2022. It then returned to the Sydney stages in a re-imagined version at PACT Theatre as part of the MADE IN SYDNEY PROGRAM in Sydney Fringe to a SOLD OUT SEASON. It is nominated for 'Best Cabaret & Musical Theatre' Award.
It is currently set to Tour to Adelaide
